How to Turn Bad Habits to Good Ones

Habits affect the quality of your life and how you make decisions. As you go through your days, you inevitably pick up habits that don’t serve your highest good. As these bad habits lead to problems, there comes a time when you may want to change them or get rid of them.

The decision to change is not always easy. You know what they say, “bad habits are hard to break.” BUT it is absolutely possible.

Turning bad habits to positive ones requires dedication and strong will. Here’s how you could get started.

Make the Decision

The first step in transforming your bad habits into good habits is making that decision. The decision to change should guide you in knowing what to do and where to seek help. You should first familiarize yourself with some of your bad habits. It can be hard to change something that you don’t know.

Identify your bad habits and decide to change. Changing bad habits can be quite hard since we put ourselves in our comfort zones and get satisfied with our bad habits. You should prepare yourself psychologically to ensure that you have the mental strength to make changes.

There may not be the perfect time to change your habits, and it comes down to whether you’re willing to make the necessary changes.

Promise Yourself

If you have indeed decided to change, you should make a promise to yourself. A personal commitment will ensure that you work towards your transformation. You can also jot down your resolutions on a piece of paper that you can stick to a wall.

This promise will ensure that you remain focused on changing your habits. A personal guarantee shows that you have made the commitment to change and willing to stick to keeping your promise. This way, you can be accountable for the accomplishment of personal goals.

Seek Help

If you’re dealing with a habit problem, there is no harm in asking for help. You can find someone who you can confide in and ask for advice. It also depends on the kind of habits that you want to break.

Some habits, like smoking, can be quite hard to quit, and you may need help to break the chains. You can always seek for assistance in case you feel like you can’t do it alone. Asking for help doesn’t mean you’re weak, but it shows that you are strong enough to admit you have a problem and ask for help.

Self-Discipline

Once you decide to change, you should start immediately. The decision to change is your first step to change your bad habits. Start building on your idea to improve.

It may get hard along the way with your mind telling you to give up, but you should be resilient. Self-discipline will enable you to stick to your decision and transformation routine. You can set a time duration for each new good habit that you want to adapt.

You can decide to exercise daily as part of your routine. In this case, you can set a constant time duration for working out and maintain your routine.

Consistency

The decision to change will not be enough. You should be consistent in what you’re doing to achieve a constant routine. For you to adapt to a new habit, you need consistency. It may be hard at first, but pushing yourself to the limits will make the whole process more relaxed.

Ensure that you have the self-discipline to stick to your routine. Research shows it takes about 21 days to form a new habit. Patience and consistency will enable you to adapt to new habits and break your bad habits.

Start Small

You may identify several of your bad habits. You can’t begin working on all of them at once. You’ll need to apply the divide and conquer rule. This strategy involves tackling one habit after another.

The process is gradual, and you have to take it slow. Start with one bad habit, work on it, and move on to the next one. Transforming one bad habit to a good one is enough motivation factor to help you work on the other bad habits.

Find a Partner

It is easier to achieve your routine goals if you have someone to motivate you. A success partner is a name given to such a person who will push you towards your goals. Find a success partner who will not take it easy on you and will follow you throughout.

A success partner will be accountable for you and ensure that you stick to keeping your promise to change.

Self-confidence

To change, you have to believe you can do it. You have to believe in yourself, irrespective of how difficult it may get. Being your cheerleader will motivate you to work on yourself to become someone you can feel proud of.

You may find it challenging to achieve your goals when you think negatively about them. Be positive about your behavioral changes. You need to believe that you can do it and push through every obstacle that you set for yourself.

Keep Going

When you backslide on your changing efforts, you shouldn’t beat yourself up. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Consider it as a minor slip and get back on your feet. Don’t lose sight of your goals and what you intend to accomplish.

You shouldn’t expect the whole process to be a smooth sail in the sea. Slip-ups are expected and should motivate you to focus and prove yourself wrong. You can change your habits if you remain oriented to do so and improve your quality of life. Get back on track and continue with your journey.

Determine Your Triggers

Several factors may cause you to adapt to a particular behavior. In most cases, stress, depression, and boredom may make you pick up certain habits to distract your mind. Every good or bad behavior has a triggering element.

Find out what triggers you and whether there is an underlying problem behind your bad habits. Identifying and eliminating your trigger points will enable you to know where to begin and how to go about your life transformation.

It’s Never Too Late

Bad habits will interrupt how you live your life and relationships with others. Your habits may affect your productivity and cause issues at work or school. Better late than never. You should choose to work on your habits rather than pretend you’re okay and live with them.

Put yourself first and be determined to change. It’s not supposed to be easy for you, and perseverance and patience will be imperative. Decide to change and prepare yourself mentally. In case you fail at first, pull yourself together, dust yourself, keep your head up and keep going to change for the better.
